Biografía
Acerca de mí
Hi there my name is Alexander Pennington I work as an optometrist in England. I grew up as a competitive swimmer . I specialised in the 100m butterfly, representing my county and competing at regional level. I also played rugby for my university and home town. I got into triathlon about 12 years ago. I knew I could swim so I thought I would give the rest ago. Since then I got the bug and wanted to challenge myself to go further and longer looking for ever increasing difficult challenges. And I have triathlon to thank for taking me to the end of the earth.
I was scrolling through my inbox and came across an email advertising the ballot for Patagonia. I had previously done the ICON xtri 2019. I paid the 12 dollars to enter the ballot not feeling optimistic I would get offered a slot. Then to my surprise I got offered a slot . I could not refuse so I paid the entry fee and the rest is history.
Cómo descubrí Patagonman
Mi experiencia en Patagonman
This was an experience that will live with me forever. 18 months before I signed up to this race I went through a very bad relationship breakup which resulted in depression and a breakdown. I resorted to taking drugs including crystal meth and was a complete mess. I knew if I dedicated and trained for this race and completed it I would prove to myself I have got myself mentally and physically back to where I need to be in life. All I wanted to do was go the distance and I did. I ran the whole 27 miles on the run with an injured right knee. 6 weeks later it still injured however, that day I raced the only way I was coming off that course was on a stretcher. I managed to ring that bell thank god.
Un mensaje para futuros competidores
I trained consistently hard for 9 months leading up to Patagonman and had many doubts and anxieties along the way questioning myself whether I’m fit enough and will I be able to go the distance. I’m nothing special but all I can say is if your determined enough , consistent in your training and your hungry enough you will do it. Remember break the race down in small manageable junks and that we are all a family of like minded people with a common goal supporting each other. Having done this event I realise there is nothing to fear and if I get the chance again I would enjoy the experience even more because naturally there would be less anxiety as you have done it one already and know what to expect.
