Acerca de mí
My name is Francisco, I am a financial auditor, originally from Chile, currently based in London. Although from 9am to 5pm I work in an office, I try to spend the rest of my spare time outdoors. I love cycling, running, swimming, hiking.
I first found out about Patagonman on social media, by chance mostly. Some friends invited me to complete an Ironman 70.3, from that the next challenge was a full Ironman and as I became part of that world, I learned about new and tougher challenges. Patagonman became a dream, considering the difficulty of the race but also because the race takes place in my country
Cómo descubrí Patagonman
Mi experiencia en Patagonman
I signed up for the ballot early in 2024 thinking that only 300 people would get a place. I thought there was no chance I'd be selected so probably this would become a challenge for 2025. When I got the good news in March 2024 I was half exciting, half scared. This was real now. I'd need to train. I booked a few other events throughout the year to train for Patagonman, including a few marathons, another Ironman, etc.
Being from Chile, this also became a good opportunity to take my family to Patagonia, so as I trained for the challenge, I also started to plan a nice trip with my family.
By the end of 2024, a couple of months before the race I was suffering from shin splints so the last part of my training wasn't that good. I didn't swim enough and I am definitely not a great swimmer, so I was very nervous about the whole race.
Luckily everything went well. The jump from the ferry was as epic as it was scary. It will be a long lasting memory. The cold water was my main fear, but actually the biggest challenge for me was facing the head winds during the second half of the bike ride. The run was steep, as tougher than expected after having spent all my energy battling the wind on the bike. Racing in the incredibly beautiful Patagonia, ringing the bell at the end of the race, seeing my family waiting for me at the finish line was just priceless.
Un mensaje para futuros competidores
Patagonman is just another type of challenge. Most people considering a challenge like this would have completed an Ironman. Ironman races are tough and they usually have a great vibe, however Patagonman takes all this to a completely new level. It is much tougher than an Ironman, Patagonia is unpredictable, the water is cold, the winds are strong and the run is so steep. But also, the sense of community is much bigger: you'd meet other athletes, the organisation is really good, your family can join you as support, they can run with you at the end of the race, etc. Training for this race and being able to finish it will be an adventure of a lifetime!
